Dear Olympics Trials Announcers These are triathletes. They are swimming, biking, and running nearly to the point of exhaustion or collapse. They are the best in our country, which makes them among the best in the world; they are competing for a spot on a global stage. I promise you, every one of them could take you out in a fair fight before you even realized what was happening.
So for the love of little green apples, can you please not call them girls?!

Magnus calls all women "girls" and I've been trying to tell him, without success so far, that grown-up girls like to be called "women". He doesn't do that with men so it sort of ticks me off.

Ew.
If the competitors are 20 or younger *and* the commentators are 45 or older, "girls" probably wouldn't bother me. But situations other than that, yeah. Get a clue, people.
Yeah. The Olympic-competitive triathletes are in their late 20s or early 30s. When they call the 15, 16, 17-year old gymnasts "girls," that doesn't bother me so much, because, well, they ARE girls. But a 34-year old woman?
But even 14 year old ice skaters get to be called "ladies".
In ballet no matter your age you are always called "girls" and the best I can tell it's a method of control- the ballet master is sir or madam, and the dancers are "girls and boys".
I think women works best for anyone over 18. (Someone once said they were offended for the skaters that the announcer kept calling them ladies instead of women- but that's the name of the division)

I prefer to call anyone who can tumble like that, and probably beat me to a pulp if they wanted, a woman. But yeah, since so many of them are in high school or college aged, they tend to refer to themselves as girls, so what do I know?

Your point is well taken. I think it's at least within the realm of reason to call a person who hasn't reached the age of majority a "girl," but "woman" is certainly never wrong.
Only if the announcer calls male athletes of the same age "boys".
Yeah, that's what I thought. *pteh* |
